Social Security Disability is a Federal disability program for injured workers who, because of their disabilities, are totally disabled from all substantial and gainful activity. A person's disability under the Social Security Disability system does not have to be the result of a work injury. Rather, the disability can be the result of any medical condition or injury sustained by the claimant.
The Social Security Administration considers benefits to those cases where the person can show:
1. they have been disabled for one year, or
2. they can show medical evidence that suggests the disability will extend beyond one year.
Once a claimant becomes disabled, it is important to immediately begin obtaining the necessary medical documentation of disability. Should the prognosis for disability be long term, then filing a Social Security Disability claim will be necessary.
